MIAMI, FL — November 16, 2024 — (NOTICIAS NEWSWIRE) — Murals for Humanity, in partnership with Miami-Dade County, will host a free community celebration in honor of Unsung Heroes Day and Puerto Rican Discovery Day on Sunday, November 17, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. This vibrant event, held in the heart of Miami, will feature various exciting activities for the public, including free food, music, beverages, and community festivities.

The celebration marks three years since Murals for Humanity and Miami-Dade County launched Unsung Heroes Day and Puerto Rican Discovery Day in 2021. The event will recognize the immense contributions of local artists and community leaders who have shaped Miami's vibrant cultural landscape. On this special day, Susana Baker, Founder of Murals for Humanity, and five outstanding honorees will be presented with official Proclamations from Miami-Dade County for their extraordinary work in the arts and community service.

Since the inception of Unsung Heroes Day, it has become a cherished tradition, highlighting artists' essential role in Miami’s development. Susana Baker, a passionate advocate for urban art and underserved communities, worked closely with Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava to create this annual event. Through her work with Murals for Humanity, a grassroots organization that empowers artists and beautifies schools and underrepresented neighborhoods, Baker has seen firsthand how artists often give back to their communities, sometimes working for free or for modest compensation. These dedicated artists often paint through extreme conditions—rain, heat, or cold—to bring beauty to our neighborhoods.

Unfortunately, as the buzz around street art grows, many artists find themselves displaced or facing exorbitant costs to continue their work. For example, in Wynwood, artists who helped transform the district into a global destination are now being priced out, with wall rentals sometimes exceeding $25,000. This issue prompted Susana Baker to speak with Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava, who immediately supported the idea of establishing Unsung Heroes Day. The event has been held annually to celebrate artists contributing to Miami's cultural fabric despite facing many challenges.

In addition to Unsung Heroes Day, the event will also celebrate Puerto Rican Discovery Day, a special observance highlighting the contributions of Puerto Rican artists and the broader Caribbean community. As Chair of Arts for the Puerto Rican Chamber, Susana Baker wanted to ensure that Miami’s rich Puerto Rican diaspora is celebrated alongside its thriving urban art scene. The event will showcase performances and contributions from some of Miami's finest artists, with a focus on the intersection of Puerto Rican and Caribbean culture.

This year’s honorees include:

  • German Du Bois – Muralist and Artist
  • Nicole Henry – Award-winning Jazz Singer
  • Nestor Torres – Latin Grammy Award-winning Musician and Flutist
  • Ivan Rogue – Muralist, Fine Artist
  • Peter Tunney – Contemporary Artist, Author, Philanthropist, and Wynwood Walls’ First Artist-in-Residence

Each honoree will be recognized for their philanthropic contributions to the Miami community and their work in inspiring others through the power of art.

The Unsung Heroes Day and Puerto Rican Discovery Day celebration would not be possible without the generosity of local businesses and sponsors, including:

  • Mana Wynwood
  • Moishe Mana
  • COYO Taco
  • El Barahenque
  • Bonnie the Colorful Creator
  • Murals for Humanity
  • Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava
  • Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce

The event is free to the public, and everyone is invited to join the celebration. Bring your family and friends to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, delicious food, refreshing beverages, live music, and engaging community activities.
